A note from the dean

Greetings, College of Social Work alumni and friends! I am pleased to share this fall edition of The Stillman with you. This issue is of particular importance to me as it focuses on the engaging research and scholarship of our faculty and students. I’m excited to share the myriads of ways our folks contribute to the evidence of our social work profession and are helping foster a better world. Through our research, we are addressing realworld problems with the goal of promoting health and wellness. As a top social work program in the country, our rigorous community-engaged research makes a difference and pushes the boundaries of what is possible.
Our research office, led by Dr. Michelle Johnson-Motoyama, encourages, facilitates and supports the research enterprise of the college. The office offers our faculty a full range of services to support the college’s extensive research activities. The college also is committed to supporting student research as undergraduate and graduate students learn to engage in and use evidence-based practice. At the doctoral level, students go even further and engage in their own independent inquiry related to their research.
This issue is brimming with research-related stories. You’ll read about how our scholarship is aligned with the Grand Challenges for Social Work. Led by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare, the Grand Challenges program is tackling the nation’s toughest social problems and championing social progress powered by science.
The college also created a monthly research feature that demonstrates our commitment to serving communities through our expertise. Faculty researchers—Drs. Alan Davis, Smitha Rao and Katie Calhoun—have engaged with major news networks and publications about their work. And several faculty were recognized this year with Ohio State’s prestigious engaged scholar awards.
We are a college focused on advancing new knowledge, improving outcomes for all populations, improving policy and social work practice, and designing innovative approaches and interventions to our most pressing issues.
Feel free to send me an email at Jenkins.1443@osu.edu to let me know how you’re changing the world.
