Welcome to Public Health Ethics: Understanding and Evaluating Bias in Public Health Initiatives. This ethics course is designed for social workers and health care professionals. The focus will be on the frameworks of ethics seen in public health with the goal of educating participants to engage in critical thinking around how public health campaigns may affect the clients they serve and the work they do. This course is a macro level course designed to provide the learner with new perspectives on how various frameworks of ethics apply to the work that they undertake as part of the profession of social work.

This course is constructed as reading-based and non-interactive.

Objectives

  1. Define relevant terms associated with public health ethics, its aims, outcomes, and tools.
  2. Compare and contrast the goals and focus of the various ethical frameworks described.
  3. Analyze the type of ethical tools being used in various examples seen in public health campaigns.
  4. Apply critical thinking to assist in evaluating bias and stigma in public health campaigns moving forward.

VP of Programs, Catholic Services

Amy VanDyke PhD will be your instructor for this course. In her current work as VP of Programs for Catholic Services, she focuses on ethics and justice issues in the care for the poor and vulnerable. Formerly, she was the System Ethicist for Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus OH, where she was responsible for the development and implementation of all ethics services and programs for the multiple hospital systems. Before this role, she worked for Kaiser-Permanente as the Director of Bioethics in the West Los Angeles Region of Southern California and as the Consulting Ethicist at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Amy earned her PhD in healthcare ethics from Duquesne University and her master’s degree and undergraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the European Society on the Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care (ESPMH).

Evaluations will be immediately downloadable and must be completed to receive CE credits. Certificates will be available to download once the once the evaluation is received.
