AFIC and COAAA Named Recipients of Prestigious Aging Innovations Award from USAging
Congratulations to the Age-Friendly Innovation Center (AFIC) Shallow Subsidy Pilot Program for receiving a 2026 Aging Innovations Award from USAging for their Shallow Subsidy Pilot Program!
This accolade recognizes USAging’s Area Agency on Aging and Title VI Native American Aging Program members that have found new and innovative ways to support older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers as they navigate their communities.
In collaboration with the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA), the Shallow Subsidy Program was launched in July 2024 to promote housing security for low-income older adult renters by examining the impact of shallow rental subsidies on older adults.
The program received third place among forty-nine awardees honored during USAging’s 51st Annual Conference and Tradeshow, July 18–21, in San Diego, CA.
“We are grateful for this recognition from USAging and proud of our partnership with COAAA, which made the work possible,” remarks Marisa Sheldon, Director of AFIC. “As the number of older adults facing housing insecurity due to affordability challenges continues to grow, programs like the Shallow Subsidy Pilot offer promising solutions that inform policy and practice both in Ohio and across the country.”
Faculty member and AFIC affiliate, Dr. Katie Calhoun, adds, “The recognition from USAging and on-going partnership with COAAA affirms the importance of testing innovative, evidence-based approaches to address housing insecurity among older adults.”
