University Partnership Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program

  • The program was piloted in 2002 as part of the Child Welfare Workforce Professional Education Program.
  • 21 students are chosen from among seniors in BSSW, MSW-ASAP, MSW I and MSW II to be part of the UPP program.
  • Students specialize in public child welfare in their elective course work and field placement.
  • The training includes: two child welfare courses, a field seminar in public child welfare, training sessions through the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program and a field placement in an Ohio public children’s services agency.
  • After earning a social work degree, successful hiring and with a commitment to work for at least one year at an Ohio public children services agency, UPP graduates will receive an employment incentive of $5,000.
  • Please note that current employees (caseworkers, supervisor, and administrators) of an Ohio public children services agency are also eligible.

“I spent one year as a UPP intern at Franklin County Children Services and could not have been better prepared. My UPP internship gave me
the hands-on experience I needed to be a successful caseworker. I was able to shadow in all the different departments and gain a
well-rounded view of everything we do to ensure child safety and strengthen families. I loved meeting
with the other interns regularly to learn through one another’s experiences. I am now entering my sixth year of
employment in the child welfare field and still draw upon what I learned every day!” –
Carrie Miller, 2017-18 UPP student
