Field Education StudentsHuman Rights Activities

The 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) places a strong emphasis on human rights as a central component of social work education.

Under Competency 2: Advance Human Rights and Social, Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice, CSWE calls on social work students to:

  • Understand and apply human rights frameworks in practice.
  • Promote social, racial, economic, and environmental justice
  • Challenge systemic oppression and advocate for policies and practices upholding the dignity and worth of all individuals.

The College of Social Work at The Ohio State University requires all students to complete human rights activities (HRA) each semester you are enrolled in the practicum. The purpose of HRA hours are to provide students with the chance to engage in advocacy outside of the practicum, as well as volunteering within their own community. When we talk about advocacy, we mean advocacy on a macro level addressing issues for entire populations. When we talk about volunteering, we mean working on a more individual level to help individuals in need.

For detailed information about hour requirements and approved activities, you can view our Human Rights Activities Policy. To get a better idea of what we mean by “human rights,” you can view the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

If you have any questions about HRAs, please contact your field liaison. If you are an agency and you’d like to submit an HRA, please complete the form.
