Description

This training will provide participants with an overview of who can diagnose, what the new changes to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM5TR) mean, how they are pertinent to crisis workers, and how to begin engaging in diagnostic and assessment talk in a crisis setting. Lethality assessments will be reviewed. DSM-5-TR sections that cover depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and trauma and substance use disorders will also be reviewed to provide diagnostic tools for crisis workers’ toolboxes.

Target Audience: 988 crisis call line staff and other human services professionals

Note: If you have a copy of the DSM-5-TR, please feel free to have it available for you to reference during the training; however, this is NOT required.

This course is approved for 3 CE hours for Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists in the state of Ohio.

This course is approved for Substance Use Counselors in domain C4 in the state of Ohio.

Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits through ACE.

Learning Objectives

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify which new DSM-5-TR changes pertain to them as crisis works and how these changes can help assess severity. 
  2. Access tools to engage in lethality assessments in a crisis setting that can lead to diagnostic impressions.  
  3. Identify questions they can ask about depression, anxiety, trauma or substance use disorders that can help with a diagnostic impression to aid referral to the correct place.

Course Completion Requirements

  • Participants are required to stay logged in for the Q&A portion of the training for successful completion, as it is part of the educational portion of this course.
  • Course completion is based on timed attendance as tracked by Zoom. Absolutely NO partial credit will be available for this training.
  • Each participant must complete a course evaluation within THREE (3) business days of the session, by the deadline stated during the training.
  • The course evaluation will include an unscored post-test that each participant must complete.
  • Certificates will be emailed to participants within 7 business days to those who meet course requirements.
  • Participants who submit an active and eligible license number issued by the Ohio CSWMFT Board and/or the Ohio CDP Board will be reported to CE Broker within 14 business days.

Community Lecturer at The Ohio State University

Jennifer Haywood, LISW-S, LICDC-CS, has been a fulltime community lecturer at The Ohio State University College of Social Work since 2003. She specializes in teaching the DSM course, Motivational Interviewing, as well as addictions and clinical courses. She has been an experienced continuing education trainer since 1998, and has been an addictions specialist since 1997. Haywood currently trains groups, teaches and runs a private practice in Worthington, Ohio, where she treats clients for mental health issues, addiction and trauma. She also supervises individuals in her private practice (one of her favorite things to do) and has been a part of the Ohio State and Columbus community since she received her MSW from the college in 1996.
