Research and Honors

The College of Social Work is committed to supporting student research. As a BSSW and MSW student, you’ll learn to use science-based evidence to guide your practice, and the use of scientific method to evaluate your efforts is a key aspect of our curricula. BSSW and MSW students challenge themselves by conducting independent research, partnering with faculty to publish and present research at conferences in and in journals, helping faculty with their research efforts, and submitting non-honors thesis work. At the doctoral level, you’ll engage in independent inquiry related to a number of important topics.

The College Research Office supports doctoral students in developing and submitting grant proposals and contracts. With several decades of combined research experience, the staff of the Research Office is available to assist with all of your pre- and post-award needs. Visit the Contact Us page to learn more.

Honors Program

The Honors Program, which currently offers a choice of a Thesis, Social Impact or Second Major pathway, seeks to enhance creative thinking and critical inquiry skills, and develop dynamic leaders who are prepared to meaningfully engage with issues relevant to the social work profession. Social Work students who have at least a 3.4 grade point average may apply to the Honors Program. Successful completion of the Honors Program leads to graduation with Honors Research Distinction or Honors Distinction. For more information, contact Andréa Severson at severson.10@osu.edu.

Poster printing

The College of Social Work encourages students to present their research findings, and aims to provide the tools and resources necessary to make this happen. Poster templates are available at go.osu.edu/cswposters and can be printed in-house with the approval of a supporting faculty member. Contact Byron Roush (roush.94@osu.edu) with any printing requests.
