Mental health providers frequently counsel those who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. In this session, attendees will learn about the impacts childhood sexual abuse can have on one’s mental health and development. Attention will be paid to counseling both young clients as well as adult clients who have experienced sexual victimization. Important counseling considerations will also be discussed. Finally, evidence-based approaches that can be used to support this population will be addressed. Attendees will engage in several experiential activities that can be used with clients who have experienced sexual victimization, so please come prepared with paper and drawing/writing materials.

- Participants will be able to develop a trauma-informed approach that can be used when working with child sexual abuse survivors.
- Participants will be able to describe specific interventions that can be used to help clients who have been sexually abused as children.

Agenda
9 a.m. – Discuss the impacts of childhood sexual abuse on one’s developmental/mental health

10 a.m. – Learn about counseling considerations when working with those who were sexually abused in childhood
10:53 a.m. – 7 minute Break
11 a.m. – Learn about treatments and intervention strategies that can be used to help clients who have experienced childhood sexual abuse

Distinguished Professor and Director of the Clinical Mental Health and Addictions Counseling Programs at Youngstown State University
Victoria E. Kress, Distinguished Professor, Ph.D./LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC is the director of the clinical mental health and addictions counseling programs at Youngstown State University. She served as a governor appointed member of the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. She has been the recipient of over 40 professional and community service awards, most of which for her advocacy, leadership, scholarship, community service, and mentorship initiatives. She has also received awards for her work with people who have intellectual disabilities, for empowering girls in her community, for her sexual assault prevention efforts, and for her child abuse advocacy work. She has published over 130 refereed articles and book chapters, and she has co-authored 5 books on counseling youth and adults. She has been recognized in a number of publications as the top producer/publisher in counseling journals over the past two decades. She served as the associate editor of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling, and as an editorial board member for many counseling journals. She is a past president of Chi Sigma Iota International, the Association for Humanistic Counseling, and the Ohio Counseling Association; she is a past ACA Midwest Region Chair; and she is the current president of the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She has volunteered and worked in Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, and Tanzania, promoting mental health awareness and training, and the professionalization of counseling.
