As schools and sports ramp up across Ohio this August, Dr. Samantha Bates, associate professor in the College of Social Work, is helping educators, coaches and school leaders prepare to support student well-being both in the classroom and on the field.

Faculty member Dr. Sehun Oh’s latest study analyzes the intersection of substance use at the workplace amongst U.S. employees.

Congratulations to Dr. Joyce Lee who has been elected as a director-at-large for the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR). Lee will serve a three-year term running from March 2025 through January 2028.

Congratulations to Dr. Nancy Mendoza whose research article, “The Impact of Latino Culture on the Experiences of Abuelitas (Grandmothers): How cultural values like familismo, machismo and marianismo can influence grandmothers’ view of their role,” appeared in the Generations Journal.

July is Minority Mental Health Month in the United States, and the College of Social Work would like to take this time to recognize Dr. Lois Marie Clay Stepney, whose expertise lies in part in addressing the collective mental health and holistic wellbeing of Powerful Groups Targeted for Oppression (PGTO).

Faculty and students interested in involving the community in their scholarship should establish genuine relationships with prospective community partners well before writing a grant application or a research project begins

Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Kaiser and PhD candidate Ritika Kurup—both received 2025-26 University Outreach and Engagement grants with Kaiser also being selected for the Engaged Scholars Academy.

The U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Specialist Program partners with international institutions to bring American scholars abroad, offering a platform to share their teaching and research. Karandikar was able to collaborate with the University of Coimbra, where she lectured and conducted training on global human trafficking, the sex trade and migration.
