Congratulations to Dr. Nancy Mendoza whose research article, “The Impact of Latino Culture on the Experiences of Abuelitas (Grandmothers): How cultural values like familismo, machismo and marianismo can influence grandmothers’ view of their role,” appeared in the Generations Journal.
The article discusses the impact of Latina grandmother caregivers, the appropriate interventions and support services most appropriate for those raising grandchildren, and how grandmother caregivers perceive themselves.
“As the pillars of the family, Latinas are respected, admired, serve as role models, and are responsible for the health and unity of the family,” says Mendoza. “Interventions that highlight this role of being the family pillar can be beneficial in supporting both the Latina grandmother and her family.”
Published quarterly, the American Society on Aging’s Generations Journal addresses current aging topics, giving specific attention to practice, research and policy.
