Dr. LaVada Washington earned her PhD from Ohio State’s College of Education and Human Ecology this summer
Four years ago, Washington began her new journey with exciting promise during a historic and tumultuous year for higher education. When she was accepted into the Teaching and Learning, Multicultural and Equity Studies program, it represented much more than elevating her academic status.
“As I look back on this doctoral journey, it provided me with another way to engage with the curriculum and societal concerns that affect us all,” says Washington. “This doctorate in philosophy symbolizes the need for more diverse voices and representation within higher education. I am so thankful for the educators who came before me and for their guidance along the way.”
She adds, “As I continue to grow, engage and educate, I know it is important that I mentor the up-and-coming social work educators. I feel my journey is just getting started and I am excited about this new chapter. I will use it to open doors for women who look like me. Women of color need to ensure we are in the room, at the table and even leading the conversation. This degree will be a gateway.”
Washington currently works as an education coordinator/liaison and community lecturer and has been with the college since December 2017.
