Columbus City Councilmember Melissa Green, chair of the Health, Human Services, & Equity Committee, sponsored Resolution 0058X-2024 to celebrate March as National Social Work Month and recognize the critical contributions of social workers in the fight to achieve equity. Social workers serve on the front lines helping clients navigate a myriad of issues including mental health, substance use, trauma, housing, and food insecurity. Social workers remain in high demand, with many states reporting critical workforce shortages in the human services sector. The 2024 Social Work Month theme, “Empowering Social Workers,” embodies the need for society to support those in the profession continuing to provide life-affirming work in critical times of need.
Councilmember Green is serving as the first Licensed Social Worker on Columbus City Council. She will use her professional experiences to help inform decision-making in her roles as chair of the Health, Human Services, and Equity committee, and vice chair of the Housing, Homelessness, & Building committee.
She has a dual bachelor’s degree in communication and anthropology and a master’s degree in social work.
Dean David Jenkins attended the meeting to accept the resolution and offer comments.
