“HIV/AIDS Awareness Month serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing global challenge posed by the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” says Dr. Donte T. Boyd, associate professor in the College of Social Work and a visiting professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies. “Raising awareness helps combat stigma and misinformation associated with HIV acquisition while focusing on educating people about HIV, prevention and treatment. It emphasizes the importance of regular testing and safe practices to prevent the spread of HIV.”
Boyd’s research is centered on the impact of socio-contextual factors on the decision-making behaviors of Black youth, with a focus on young Black men who have sex with men.

“World AIDS Day is also December 1, which provides an opportunity to honor and remember the millions who have lost their lives to the disease. It is a time to support those currently living with HIV/AIDS,” says Boyd. “World AIDS Day plays a vital role in the global health landscape by fostering awareness, education, and solidarity, while driving the ongoing effort to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic.”
Boyd aims to understand how family dynamics and significant relationships influence HIV acquisition and other health-related outcomes. Specifically, his work examines the role of families—including parents, chosen families, and siblings—in mitigating suicidal thoughts and behaviors and in promoting HIV prevention strategies. Additionally, he explores other external and internal assets that could lead to improved health outcomes for youth.
Prior to his current faculty roles, Boyd earned his PhD from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. He has significant experience as a social worker within various AIDS service organizations. Boyd served as a case manager for HIV-positive individuals under the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and worked as a public health representative before pursuing advanced education.
“This month allows for reflection on the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, such as advancements in treatment and reductions in new infections. It also highlights ongoing challenges, particularly in areas with high infection rates and limited access to healthcare,” adds Boyd.
