Course Description

This non-CE course offers a view of healing justice practices as defined by Cara Page and the Healing Justice Collective (Healing by Choice, n.d.) as “Healing justice…identifies how we can holistically respond to and intervene on generational trauma and violence, and to bring collective practices that can impact and transform the consequences of oppression on our bodies, hearts and minds”.

Further, it promotes a healing justice framework for personal and collective transformative healing within behavioral health practice in the United States community context.

While centering the needs of historically and currently oppressed people including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) along with Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, plus Allies and others (2SLGBTQIA+), this course will seek to connect individual and collective healing methods with the principles of ethical clinical practice that is in alignment with transformative efforts designed to disrupt and dismantle systems of oppression.

Evidence-based means of preserving professional resilience and wellbeing will be explored, along with opportunities for collective healing being identified in support of the client system and staff wellness, as part of this parallel healing justice process.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the concept of healing justice as it relates to working in behavioral health with BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and their families.
  • Apply the concept of healing justice to their own intersections of professional well-being, mindful self-care, and active engagement in social justice work.
  • Identify collective, culturally informed practices to support holistic health, healing, and the well-being of BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ client systems and colleagues.

Developed by Dr. Lois Marie Clay Stepney, PhD, MSW, LISW-S

Clinical Faculty, The Ohio State University College of Social Work

Lois Marie Clay Stepney, PhD, MSW, LISW-S, has served in the Columbus Community since 1995 in the mental health and medical fields as a social services supervisor and administrator. Two of the accomplishments Stepney is most proud of involving clinical work include starting a juvenile sex offender treatment program as the Director of Community Support Programs at the Ohio Youth Advocate Program, which also provided prevention services to sexually reactive youth. In addition, she launched the comprehensive YOU Matter Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which provides emotional support to staff, faculty, students, and volunteers dealing with exposures to potentially traumatic events in their work at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and Research Institute.

In academia, Stepney served in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University as the MSW program director from Autumn 2016 – Spring 2020, leading the charge in scaling the online program from 17 enrolled students to over 400 during her tenure. She also served as the Curriculum Director in the College of Social Work until Spring Semester of 2021, leading several of the support efforts for students and adjunct instructors in the College who were reeling from the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Curriculum Director, Stepney assisted the College Community in its initial steps of reimaging the MSW curriculum, which she is now helping to actualize as one of four inaugural clinical faculty members in the College of Social Work. Stepney’s research interests center in the areas of healing justice, helping professionals’ wellness, Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) wellness, social work pedagogy, and transformative social work practices.
