DSC_0101Congratulations to Khalid Bowens (’15) who was selected as the 2015 National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ohio Chapter Region 5 Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSW) Student of the Year. Bowens is a native of Akron, Ohio, and began his career at The Ohio State University in August of 2012 as a psychology major. However, during his first semester, he took Social Work 1100 and immediately realized that social work was the route for him.

Bowens will be attending the University of Michigan this fall as a graduate student with their Detroit Clinical Scholars Program. Through this program, he will work with underserved racial and ethnic minority children, adolescents and transitional age youth living with physical and behavioral health conditions.

Following graduation with his MSW, Bowens plans to work in the field with racial and ethnic minority children and adolescents living in urban areas who identify as part of the LGBTQA community. Bowens plans to continue his connections and relationships with staff and fellow alumni of Ohio State, especially through the College of Social Work.

Bowens was nominated by Andrea Severson, an academic counselor in the undergraduate (BSW) program at the college. He was presented with his award on July 23 during a regional awards banquet.
