Keith Warren’s scholarship focuses on mutual aid based programs, those in which people with a problem help others with similar problems.  Mutual aid based programs include therapeutic communities for substance abuse and criminal behavior, twelve step programs and other self-help groups, and clubhouse programs for people with severe and persistent mental illness.  Dr. Warren is currently applying social network analysis to understand the interpersonal interactions in mutual aid programs, with a dual focus on illuminating program processes and linking processes to outcomes.  The ultimate goal of this research is to develop interventions to increase the effectiveness of these programs.
