Alcohol: The Most Abused Drug in the US

Alcohol is the most abused drug in the U.S., causing more problems than any other drug, yet it is the most accepted. We will explore the prevalence of alcohol abuse and the problems that result, including, but not limited to, alcoholism. We will discover what research says about drinking in moderation and why drinking becomes a problems for some people, but not others.

 

Objectives:

  • Identify alcohol as the most abused drug in the U.S. and the problems that result from its abuse
  • Identify research-based guidelines for moderate alcohol consumption by adults
  • Answer the question of why alcoholism runs in families
    Overview the progression of use, abuse and dependency, including the stages of alcoholism
  • Discuss the social, psychological, biological and cultural factors that contribute to alcohol problems

Allison Sharer, OCPS II, has worked in the prevention field since 1983. She currently works part-time as Assistant Director at Drug Free Action Alliance, and is an independent trainer and consultant. She has worked with programs doing peer, community-based and environmental prevention, and she has developed and presented educational opportunities for a wide variety of audiences.
