Pregnancy and postpartum mood/anxiety disorders are the most common complication of childbearing and can have a significant negative impact on the entire family. There will be a brief review of the spectrum of the disorders. Available screening tools, their use and efficacy will be discussed. Participants will explore the many treatment options available as well as barriers for their use by both consumers and providers. Guidance on identifying and utilizing community, print and online resources, creating a provider network and enabling women to navigate a recovery plan will be provided.
Participants will have learned at the completion of this training:
1. List screening tools used to identify perinatal mood/anxiety disorders
2. Discuss treatment options
3. Identify applicable resources
Tonya Fulwider began involvement with postpartum depression support after her own experience with perinatal illness in 1998. She currently serves as the Executive Director and co-founder of POEM, Inc. (Perinatal Outreach and Encouragement for Moms), co-chair of the Franklin County Maternal Depression Task Force, a state of Ohio coordinator for Postpartum Support International (PSI) and PSI Regional Coordinator for the six-state Central Region. Tonya lectures regularly on the topics of perinatal mental health and social support and co-authored the PSI publication “Developing a Sustainable Perinatal Support Network in Your Community.” Tonya and her husband David are the parents of Veronica and Sarah.
