Many clients who receive social work services find spirituality or religion to be a source of comfort and/or distress. Today’s social workers are expected to be able to respond appropriately to the needs of a diverse population. This training will provide practical knowledge and skills on how to attend to client’s spirituality or religion. Separation of church and state issues will be addressed while remaining receptive to issues of depth and transcendence.
At the conclusion of this training, participants will have:
· Learned how to assess spirituality/religion for clinical practice within a diverse context: traditional views of God, Higher Power, secular views of transcendence, etc
· Learned how to apply the therapeutic use of the self to spiritual/religious issues in clinical practice
· Learned creative psychosocial intervention related skills as related to spirituality/religion in clinical practice
Meet your presenter:
Dr. Ahern has worked as a therapist, an administrator in medical social work, mental health and recovery, criminal justice settings, adjunct faculty in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University and is a certified cognitive and gestalt therapist: certified in multi-systemic family therapy. Currently, Dr. Ahern is clinical director for Union County Juvenile and Probate Court, a Lutheran pastor and a private practitioner at New Reflections Counseling Center.
