Low health literacy has a direct impact on patient safety, patient and family satisfaction, healthcare outcomes, and the cost of providing services. The stress of illness often makes it difficult for even the well educated to remember information. During this workshop we will discuss the prevalence of low health literacy and its impact on care. You will learn simple, practical strategies for improving communication with patients and families. The instructor will demonstrate different materials and techniques for teaching staff about low health literacy. At the end of the session, you will have the opportunity to develop a plan for addressing the issue of low health literacy within their agency.
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Describe or demonstrate at least one simple strategy for improving patient/provider communication.
- Identify how to access or develop training tools on low health literacy.
- Outline an agency specific plan for addressing the issue of low health literacy.
