Mr. Simonds will also provide essential tools for effective techniques to build positive interactions with people from this population within clinical settings, communities and work or organizational settings.

Participants will have learned at the completion of this training:
How to look at their own feelings and biases towards those with disabilities
A history of disabilities in the United States ...and where are we today?
Effective techniques to use for interactions while working with persons in this population

Meet your presenter: Brent Simonds
Brent moved to Columbus in April of 1998 to attend The Ohio State University, after transferring from the University of Toledo. The following year he was injured in a diving accident at a party near campus and fractured his spine, resulting in a cervical spinal cord injury. Not letting quadriplegia slow him down, he returned to school a year and a half later and earned a Bachelor’s in 2004 and a Master’s degree in 2005 in Social Work, both from Ohio State.

He moved to New York City in 2006 where he worked as a counselor in the country’s first fully accessible shelter for survivors of domestic violence with disabilities.  Brent returned to Columbus in 2009 where he is currently the Advocacy Coordinator at MOBILE, The Mid-Ohio Board for an Independent Living Environment. Last year, he became the first participant in Pelotonia to use a handcycle and is now starting an agency, Cycling for All, to assist others with disabilities in their quest for increased independence through the world of cycling.
