Working with Clients with Mental Retardation and Mental Health Issues

Presenter Jennifer Haywood will provide mental health professionals an intermediate level training through both didactic and group discussions from participant and presenter experiences. Jennifer will delivers up-to-date treatment skills and techniques using actual case studies. Participants will gain an overview of the common co-existing diagnoses and assessment challenges that clinicians have when working with this population. Discussions will include ways to determine appropriate diagnosis and assessment techniques based on individual strengths and treatment implications of the MRDD client.

 

Participants will have learned at the completion of this training:

        Learn common implications of having a client that has a mental health diagnosis on Axis I with a co-existing MR diagnosis on Axis II

        Learn how to assess someone with MR for mental health issues

        Common MH and Substance use issues associated with the MR client

        Treatment implications will be discussed to assist the clinician working with the client with MH and MR or with all three issues; MH, MR and CD

Lori Summers is an MSW II student here at Ohio State University.  She has had a lot of experience with the MRDD population.  During her undergraduate years obtaining her BA in psychology at Bowling Green University, she worked at Blanchard Valley Industries for 5 summers with MRDD individuals in a work setting.  During one of her undergraduate years she working in a residential setting with MR individuals, and last summer she worked at the Jewish Community Center in the camp that specialized with kids with Developmental Disabilities.  Currently she works as an ABA therapist with an Autistic Client.  Lori is excited to present on this topic with her professor, and will give an enthusiatic and informative presentation on an area she is passionate about. 

 

 

Jennifer Haywood, LISW, LICDC, has been treating dually diagnosed adults and adolescents for over fifteen years; is a private practitioner and lecturer at Ohio State University, College of Social Work, Columbus State and Capital University.
