How do we balance the tension between honoring an individual’s wishes and promoting his best interests? When, if ever, are we justified in breaching confidentiality? When family members ask the medical team to “do everything” but the patient has expressed a wish to stop treatment, whose desires should prevail? If a patient requests futile treatment, should this be given? Even if, by doing so, we deny scarce resources to others? In this highly interactive workshop, we will use case analysis and discussion to examine the ethical foundations of practice and explore the role of social work in helping patients, families and team members address ethical dilemmas.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the fundamental ethical principles within case scenarios.
  • Articulate what role social workers take in addressing ethical dilemmas within agency settings.
Kathy Raffel, LISW, is a doctoral student in social work at The Ohio State University. Prior to moving to Columbus, Kathy worked for ten years as a patient education specialist at Mayo Clinic. She is a member of the Bioethics Network of Ohio and the Ethics Advisory Committee for Community Based Services with OhioHealth.
