The foundation of effective communication – with clients, consumers, colleagues and in our personal relationships – is listening. Yet few people are skilled at listening and know the techniques and tools that enable someone to be an effective listener.
Are you the best listener you can be? Do you utilize different listening tools depending on the environment and the person to whom you are listening? Listening is not just an issue of taking time or focusing. An exceptional listener knows how to elicit detail when appropriate, how and when to give response, and how to utilize non-verbals to communicate.
In this training, we will discuss listening strategies, tools and implementation techniques; conduct a self-assessment of listening strengths and challenges; and practice listening through role play scenarios within the training environment.
Objectives:
1. Identify listening strategies and techniques appropriate to different environments.
2. Self-assess listening capacity, strengths and challenges.
3. Practice listening and communication skills.
Presenter Jim Ryan is an Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist II with more than 25 years experience in alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention and working with youth and communities. He is also co-founder and former publisher/editor of Outlook, a newspaper targeting the gay community in Greater Columbus. Jim is president of Ryan Training & Consultation and provides services to school systems, organizations, businesses and other groups throughout the United States.
