Random and Happy Impulses:  ADHD and Childhood Bipolar Disorder

Picture a child who is impulsive, talkative, distracted, disruptive, destructive, restless, sometimes is angry or crying and has racing thoughts or gets into     conflicts with adults. Does this child have ADHD or Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (PBD)? Or both? And how can we be helpful to this child?

This training will give beginning and experienced counselors and therapists the tools to answer these questions.  We will learn how to investigate the above symptoms, all of which can occur in either disorder, to see whether the particular child fits more with ADHD or PBD.

We will deepen our understanding by looking at the brain and body in ADHD and PBD, including a look at how some medications work. We will broaden our differential diagnosis skills by looking at other disorders with similar symptoms.  We will use our understandings to guide treatment planning with individuals, families, and classrooms.

Jim Foley has 20 years of experience working with children, adults, and families. Jim has helped clients with emotional, developmental, behavioral, cognitive, learning, and relationship problems; provided counseling/therapy in homes, at agencies, and in schools from kindergarten through college; and presents workshops on a variety of topics.
