Overlooked and Underestimated: Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs

When many people think of drug abuse, they think of cocaine, heroin, and maybe marijuana. Rarely do they consider Vicodin, Ritalin, and the ever-increasing host of easy-to-get prescription and over-the-counter drugs found in medicine cabinets and among family and friends. Yet several of these legally available drugs are as powerful as some of the most dangerous illegal drugs.
We will address the prevalence of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse, prevention tools to protect youth and adults from careless and more intentional abuse, and the development of strategies to raise awareness of this issue with consumers.
Participants will learn:
1. Increase knowledge of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
2. Recognize the role of regulations, marketing, and availability on perception of harm and abuse.
3. Develop prevention tools to minimize abuse and addiction among consumers.
Trainer biography:
Jim Ryan is an Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist II with more than 25 years experience in alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention and working with youth and communities. He is also co-founder and former publisher/editor of Outlook, a newspaper targeting the gay community in Greater Columbus. Jim is president of Ryan Training & Consultation and provides services to school systems, organizations, businesses and other groups throughout the United States.
