Human Behavior in the Social Environment (lifespan human development, family development, developmental disabilities); Research (introductory research, program evaluation); and Policy (social issue analysis: families and children). Dr. Begun recently developed and taught a doctoral course on Research Integrity and Ethics, Individual Change Theories and Research for Doctoral students. As the editor of NIAAA's alcohol curriculum for social work education, and based on her recent research activities, Dr. Begun has a strong interest in teaching about alcohol and addictive behaviors. In terms of social work philosophies, Dr. Begun wholeheartedly embraces biopsychosocial aspects of human behavior and lifespan development principles in the courses that she offers. She employs teaching strategies that are designed to be responsive to a variety of learning styles and problem solving approaches.

Research Interests
Dr. Begun's early research career emphasized the development of sibling relationships across the lifespan and development in families of individuals with developmental disabilities. She was engaged in a multi-year collaborative community partnership to prevent intimate partner violence that also involved developing instruments to assess batterer's readiness to change their abusive behaviors. More recently, she has been engaged with community and other university partners in conducting several intervention efficacy and effectiveness studies related to alcohol and other substance problems.  The latest study and targeted referral utilizing Motiviational Interviewing (MI) techniques with women in jail to prepare them to address substance abuse problems at community re-entry. A small study recently completed relates to developing an assessment approach to understanding a lifecourse pattern of change attempts by alcohol studies.  Dr. Begun has also been interested in studying processes and outcomes in social work education. Most recently, she has completed a multi-year study of a "train the trainers" approach to infusing alcohol curriculum content across the MSW curriculum, and a small study of teaching social work students from a biopsychosocial perspective
