Donors and students along with faculty and staff of the College gathered on the afternoon on May 20, 2009 to celebrate the awarding of scholarships for the academic year 2009-10. Forty-five scholarships totaling nearly $93,000 were awarded to 49 undergraduate and graduate students at the College of Social Work Annual Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Faculty Club. The keynote speaker was Joyce Beatty (pictured to the right), OSU Senior Vice President for Outreach and Engagement, and former State Representative from Ohio’s 27th District. Approximately 200 were in attendance to congratulate the student scholars.
Along with the financial awards, the College also presented the McMurry Citizenship Award to social work major Elon Simms (pictured below left). The Citizenship Award, founded by 1960 social work graduate Preston V. McMurry, Jr. (below center) of Phoenix, Arizona, honors student athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA, who best exemplify the idea of "Education for Citizenship" through significant volunteer service to the community.
Coaches representing the 36 varsity sports nominated candidates for this award, and a committee of graduate-level social work student leaders selected the recipient.
Elon has been a member of the Men’s Track and Field Team for the last four years, the last two of which he was named Captain. Although track is a large component of his life, Elon Simms is driven to community service. To read more about Elon's contributions to community service, click here.
