Gift provides funding to establish perennial garden in front of Stillman Hall
“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful: they are the sunshine, food and medicine to the soul.” --Luther Burbank
The east lawn of Stillman Hall is forever changed thanks to the generosity of Dr. Judith Eggers (BS 1962, PhD 1982), of Dublin, Ohio. In honor of her mother, professor emeritus Jeanette Zupancic, Dr. Eggers contributed a gift to The College of Social Work to establish a perennial garden in front of Stillman Hall. Professor Zupancic (BS 1935, MSW 1948), also of Dublin, is a beloved member of the Social Work faculty who served from 1958-77 and as the Undergraduate Program Director for several years during her tenure.
Dr. Eggers wanted the outside of the home of the College to reflect the vibrancy and growth that is taking place on the inside of the building. The idea for a garden also evolved from Dr. Eggers’ sense of the importance of place, space and environment on an individual, which is one aspect, and at the very essence, of social work. The garden is a literal example of that concept. Its beauty, color and scent will positively inform the attitudes and expressions of our students, faculty, staff and passersby every day. One cannot help but smile at a garden, and be happy.
The preparation of the garden grounds and planting began in May and was complete by the end of spring quarter. Horticulture students in partnership with The Chadwick Arboretum will provide maintenance and watering throughout the summer and the garden's first year. During the summer, the garden is expected to bloom with a variety of flowering plants and bushes.
As you enter the building this summer, take a moment to enjoy the fragrant lilacs near the entrance.
