...because culture matters

Culture is central to who we are, how we live, and how we solve problems. Culture and cultural diverstiy are central to Social Work.

Study Abroad programs in Social Work seek to give students inside and outside of Social Work an experience in another culture which will help them to learn about and see how:

  • Another country has historically defined and currently constructs social policy, defines social work, organizes its social welfare systems, and provides and evaluates social services
  • Globalization and a changing economic climate affects social welfare institutions and the services they provide to individuals and families

Social Work Study Abroad programs also seek to provide students with an experience that will stimulate reflection and analysis of:

  • The strategies used to help individuals, families, groups, and communities adapt to changing economic and social conditions and the values, ethics, ideologies, education, interventions, and evaluations used in social work practice that underpin these strategies
  • How to assess and shape problem definitions and interventions based on plural cultural norms and their effects on development, family structure, and roles.
