Types of Graduate Associateships at OSU

The Ohio State University has three types of Graduate Associate (GA) appointments:

  • Graduate Research Associate (GRA)
  • Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA)
  • Graduate Administrative Associate (GAA)

Students may be awarded GA positions from a number of different employers:

  • The College of Social Work
  • College of Social Work faculty with funded grants
  • Other OSU faculty with funded grants
  • Other OSU academic or service units

Graduate Associateships pay a stipend and cover OSU tuition and some fees. The hiring unit sets the stipend and the additional fees that are covered.

College of Social Work GAs

The College of Social Work offers eleven 50% FTE graduate associate positions each year. Typically 4-6 of the positions are awarded to incoming students and the remaining positions are awarded to continuing students enrolled in coursework.

Incoming students are typically appointed to Graduate Research Associate (GRA) positions, where they work with College of Social Work faculty on research projects.

Continuing students enrolled in coursework are typically appointed to Graduate Teaching Associateships. The courses that GTAs are appointed to vary, but usually include SWK 230, SWK 300 and other undergraduate Social Work courses.

College of Social Work PhD students and applicants interested in these positions should complete and submit the PhD Graduate Associate Application.

Faculty Grant Funded GRAs

Social Work and other OSU faculty engaged in funded research often have allowances to hire GRAs. The Principal Investigator (PI) of the grant is responsible for hiring the GRAs working on her/his projects. They typically hire current students with the knowledge and skill sets needed for the project. Social Work faculty members consult with the PhD Office for available GRAs. Doctoral students in Social Work also have been hired for faculty projects in departments outside Social Work.

College of Social Work PhD students and applicants interested in positions available in the College of Social Work should complete and submit the PhD Graduate Associate Application. Those interested in positions outside Social Work should follow local application and hiring procedures.

Other OSU Academic and Service Units

There is no central posting service for GA positions; however, other departments and service units on campus occasionally send position descriptions to the PhD Office. Those are then forwarded to the PhD student listserv.
