The Merriss Cornell Awards were established by the Cornell family in memory and honor of the late Professor Merriss Cornell, who had a long and distinguished service to the College of Social Work until his death in April 1976.

The Merriss Cornell Scholarship award supports completion of a Master's thesis or PhD dissertation and is awarded based on evaluation of the thesis or dissertation proposal.
The Merriss Cornell Researcher award honors an outstanding completed master's thesis or PhD dissertation.
The amount of the award varies each year, but is typically between $700 and $1500.
The Merriss Cornell Awards will be presented at the Evening of Recognition held at the Mershon Auditorium in June the Friday before Spring Quarter Graduation.
Students may self-nominate or may be nominated by a faculty member. For the scholarship award, nominees must have an approved thesis or dissertation proposal. For the researcher award, nominees must have a completed thesis or dissertation by the by the end of Spring Quarter.
