About the Erlen Award

The Selma & Alexander Erlen Endowment Fund for Doctoral Student Excellence recognizes the talents of PhD students with an outstanding record in service, academics and scholarship by offerring a monetary award each year.  Drs. John and Judith Erlen endowed the award in honor of John's parents.

Award Amount

The award is endowed, so the amount of the award varies each year. It has ranged from approximately $2500-$5000.

Award Presentation

The Award is presented at the College of Social Work Scholarship Luncheon in the spring the Faculty Club. The recipient of the award also has the opportuntiy to meet and communicate with the donors.

Award Eligibility

Doctoral student or candidate in the College of Social Work with an excellent all around record of service and academic and scholarly achievement.

Application/Nomination deadline and instructions

Application/Nomination deadline:  Spring 2012

The nomination dossier should consist of the following:

  1. A 1-2 page personal statement from the student describing service activities (community, college, and university) since joining the doctoral program; academic achievements (GPA, honors or awards, progress toward degree); and scholarship (publications, professional presentations, papers submitted for review, etc.).
  2. Current curriculum vitae (C.V.)
  3. Letter of reference from the student’s advisor describing the student’s progress toward degree as well as accomplishments in service, academics, and scholarship.
  4. Letter of reference from a person familiar with the nominee’s community service activities describing level and type of involvement.
  5. Current advising report
