OSU and Social Work Administered Aid Programs

Home > Degree Programs > MSW > Funding and Financial Aid > OSU and Social Work Administered Aid Programs

  1. Scholarships: The College of Social Work awards several scholarships to its students each year. Scholarships average $1500 annually. Scholarships are not renewed from year to year. Applicants must reapply annually. To apply for a Social Work scholarship, view the list of scholarships available and complete the scholarship application (available for download winter quarter 2010).  The application will be due to the College of Social Work March 2, 2010.  Both current and prospective students are welcome to apply.

  2. Enrichment and University Fellowships: Fellowships provide tuition and a monthly stipend for first-year graduate work at OSU. Fellowship awards are highly competitive and based on prior scholastic achievement. To be eligible, applicants must take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), indicate on the OSU Graduate School Application a desire to be considered, and submit all admission materials by January 15 (or by November 30 for international applicants). Fellowships are only awarded to students enrolled full-time. The Graduate School website provides more information about fellowships.

  3. Child Welfare Traineeships: A limited number of traineeships are available through the College of Social Work from year to year. To apply for the Child Welfare University Parternship Program follow the application instructions available on the program website.

  4. Graduate Associateships (GAs): Graduate Associateships typically cover tuition costs and provide a monthly stipend. Although most Social Work GA positions are reserved for PhD students, grant-funded Graduate Research Associateships (GRAs) occasionally become available to MSW students with interest and skills in research. To be considered for a GA position, applicants submit their resumé and cover letter to the hiring faculty member in response to a position announcement. Interested and qualified students may also submit these materials to Lauren Haas in the Research Office to be saved in the GRA applicant pool file. The file is used when faculty consult the Research Office to identify qualified MSW-level candidates for an open position.

  5. Loans: Different types of loans are available to graduate students including the Federal Direct Stafford Loan administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Loan recipients must demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There are both Federal Direct Subsidized Loans for need-based aid and Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans for aid that is not based on need. Another type of loan is the Federal Direct Plus Loan available to graduate and professional students based on educational costs. In addition to loans administered by the federal government, OSU has a Short-Term University Loan designed for students who anticipate a temporary need for monitary funds or encounter an unexpected financial difficulty related to educational expenses. The limit is a maximum of $500 per term with repayment due 90 days after receipt. OSU also offers a Long-Term University Loan for students whose own resources are not sufficient to finance all of their educational costs. For more detailed information about OSU loans view the Loans page of the Student Financial Aid website.

  6. Work-Study Employment: Government subsidized campus employment is available for students who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must file the FAFSA and contact the OSU Financial Aid Counseling Center for information about additional, specific Work-Study application requirements and deadlines at (614-292-0300). Work-study positions are available in the College of Social Work and throughout the University. There are plenty of work-study positions on campus for all Ohio State students who receive work-study awards from the U.S. Department of Education.

  7. Campus Jobs for Students: Other campus jobs may be available to students regardless of financial need. These jobs are not considered work-study positions. Rather, they are hourly wage positions established by faculty and departments around campus specifically for students seeking part-time work during academic quarters. View available campus jobs.
