Pre-major Social Work Requirements

As a pre-major student, you will complete a wide range of courses that are offered across the university (General Education Curriculum).  You will also complete three social work classes designed to expose you to the social work profession; social work values; and how the issues of race, gender, class and ethnicity affect the social welfare and well-being of Americans.

  • Social Work 1120: Introduction to Social Welfare; students examine the  nature and causes of social problems, explore
the influence of societal values and beliefs on the social welfare system, and consider issues of diversity and discrimination.

  • Social Work 1130: Introduction to Social Work in a Contemporary Society; students gain an introduction to the core values, fundamental goals, unique functions and methods of the social work profession.

  • Social Work 1140: Minority Perspectives: Race, Ethnicity and Gender, students examine the structure of human societies, cultures, and institutions and the allocation of resources from the vantage point of oppressed minority populations.
