Honors Program


Overview

The Honors Program in the College of Social Work provides a small group of academically high-achieving students (those with a 3.4 grade point average or above) with an enriched baccalaureate experience while majoring in social work. 

Upon successful completion of the program, students will graduate "with  Research Distinction in Social Work," having completed two honors courses, a thesis seminar in social work, and a senior honors thesis.

Who is eligible for Honors status?

  • Incoming first-year students admitted as University Honors students
  • Pre-major students with a 3.4 minimum GPA after completing a minimum of 24 graded credit hours
  • Junior-level majors with a 3.4 minimum GPA after completing a minimum or 24 graded credit hours
  • Transfer students who can verify Honors status at their former university and who have a minimum 3.4 GPA at their former university.

What are the honors program requirements?

  • During the pre-major curriculum, students must complete a minimum of three Honors-level GECs or their equivalencies
  • During the major curriculum, students must complete three Honors research classes (SWK 3401E, SWK 3402E, and SWK 4996H) and complete 10 credits of SWK 4999H (thesis credits).

How do you maintain Honors status?

All Honors students must:

  • Maintain a 3.4 GPA, which is reviewed at the end of spring semester each academic year.
  • Enroll and earn credit in the required honors courses necessary in the pre-major or major curriculum. 
  • A 3.4 minimum GPA and completion of the thesis is necessary in order to graduate "with Research Distinction in Social Work."

Students interested in the Honors Program should speak with the social work honors academic advisor or director for additional details.
