How to Apply


APPLICATION TO THE SOCIAL WORK MAJOR

Overview

There are two options for completing the undergraduate social work major: 

  • The first option is the Traditional Undergraduate Program, which is completed by the majority of students.
     
  • The second option is the Career Acceleration Plan (CAP), which is completed over four quarters.

Traditional Undergraduate Program Criteria

In order to apply to the Traditional Program, you must meet the following criteria prior to beginning the social work major in autumn quarter: 

  • Complete the pre-major required course work: 

    (Biology 101 and 102; English 110; Math 104 or above, or math placement of N or higher; Psychology 100; Social Work 100 or equivalent, 230, 300; and Sociology 101)   

    All other GECs, if not completed prior to entering the major, must be completed prior to graduation.
     
  • Earn a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative point-hour ratio
  • Earn a minimum 2.0 pre-major point-hour ratio after completion of the required pre-major courses. 
  • Personal statement.
  • Letter of reference. 
     

CAP Program Criteria

In order to apply to the CAP program, you must meet the following criteria prior to beginning the social work major in spring quarter:
 

  • Complete the pre-major required course work.

    (Biology 101 and 102; English 110 and a 2nd writing GEC; Math 104 or above, or math placement of N or higher; Psychology 100; Social Work 100 or equivalent, 230, 300; and Sociology 101)

    All other GECs, if not completed prior to entering the major, must be completed prior to graduation.  
     
  • Earn a minimum of 110 credit hours. 
  • Complete a minimum of 81 credit hours of the University's GEC requirements.
  • Earn a minimum cumulative point-hour ratio of 3.0 and a minimum pre-major point-hour ratio of 2.0.
  • Have extensive volunteer or work experience assisting individuals, groups, or communities in need.
  • Personal statement.
  • Letter of reference.

Instructions

All future major students must complete the major application. If you are transferring into the social work major from another university or college, you must complete the application process to The Ohio State University as well as to the College of Social Work. 

To apply to the major, you must submit all of the following application materials:

1. College of Social Work Major Application

The application includes a cover page with demographic information and a personal background and professional goals statement. In addition, CAP students must include a resume of their volunteer/work experience.

2. Applicant Recommendation Form and Letter of Recommendation

Recommendation must be completed by someone who knows you in an academic or professional capacity (e.g., instructor or employer). The recommender must place the form and letter in a sealed envelope, sign across the back of the envelope and return this information to the applicant, who is responsible for submitting the reference.

3. Degree Audit (current OSU students)

4. Unofficial Transcript (current transfer students)

APPLICATION MATERIALS

DEADLINE

CAP: February 1
Traditional Program:  March 15

Applications will be sent to the committee for review after the posted deadlines. You will be notified regarding your admission via e-mail as soon as a decision has been made. CAP applicants will be notified on February 8. Applicants for the Traditional Program will be notified on April 20.

Applications received beyond the deadline will be considered if space permits.
